Anastasia Dubinkina | B'Elanna “Star Trek: Voyager”

“B'Elanna is the character that has a very special place in my heart. Being a child of two worlds, klingon and human, lead her to feeling lost in this world, as if she did not fully belong anywhere. As a person who was born into one culture and then moved to a completely different one in my teens I can relate to the struggle of trying to define one's identity when there is no clear guide and the separating lines are blurred. The anger at the world, that she uses as a coping mechanism after all the times she was mistreated by those surrounding her, hides the pain and fear of being hurt again that are dwelling deep inside her. This composition of emotions that we get from this character is what makes B'Elanna look so real, so alive. The fact that she, as a female, appears to have such emotion as anger on the screen, and that it is presented as emotion that she is allowed to have, makes B'Elanna representative for many women that are not so conforming with traditional gender roles. The journey she went through seven series showed her growth, resolving her inner battles and finally accepting herself for who she is, and that's why I find the story of B'Elanna Torres so inspiring and comforting on many levels.”
