Barret Chapman | Deanna Troi “Star Trek: The Next Generation”

“Imzadi”

When Laz approached me about this project, I knew immediately which character I would choose: Deanna Troj. I started watching TNG when it first aired as my Dad was a fan of the original series. The first few episodes were a touch too cerebral for 12-year-old me and the show did not hold my attention. Thankfully, a year later I tried it again and got absolutely hooked. Some of my favourite episodes were Troi episodes, namely “Night Terrors,” “Schisms,” and “Menage a Troi.” As the series progressed, so did her character; the writers recognized actor Marina Sirtis' range and charisma, and gave her the opportunity to shine. Deanna Troi was an especially interesting character to me because of her empath abilities on a ship whose main purpose was to seek out new life and new civilizations. Who would not want to know what an alien was feeling? Genius! I was inspired by Troj to pay attention to my own emotions as well as the emotions of the people in my life. It made me a better husband, father, friend, artist and co-worker. Marina Sirtis’ and her wonderful portrayal of Deanna Troi, taught me an important life lesson, which I will forever be grateful for.

When asked to create this piece, I immediately thought about the warmth Marina Setis brought to the show through her portrayal of Deanna Troi. I imagined the Enterprise speeding through the vast cold, dark of space juxtaposed by the warm radiance of her character.”
