Neil Fraser | Uhura Tribute “Star Trek”
“How can anyone not love a character that not only broke racial boundaries but gender boundaries as well, to be the inspiration to generations of young women that saw not only could they be on a par with the men on the Enterprise but superior in almost every way, she was strong, intelligent, compassionate, and could hold her own in a fight all wrapped up inside a beautiful person, Nichelle Nichols was simply incredible as Uhura and even since Trek she embodies the character traits to this day. More recently the amazing Zoe Saldana’s take on the role still captures Uhura’s passion and character but her importance to the whole crew has rightfully been raised. I was very young when we had Star Trek reruns here in the UK but for a role model to young black women all over the world to also inspire this young white guy to be a better person, embrace differences and shun prejudice just embodies everything Uhura stood for.”
