Rich Davies | Nyota Uhura “Star Trek"”
“Zoe Saldana’s take on Nyota Uhura is a highlight of JJ Abrams’ reboot Star Trek series for me. Building on the wonderful original Nichelle Nichols’ character but then adding so much more, Uhura is more than a match for any of the male leads in the series often adding much needed depth and warmth especially with her relationship with Spock. It’s this relationship which grounds the characters while all the spectacular stuff is taking place elsewhere. Uhura is tough (look at her taking on the Klingons and battling Khan in Star Trek Into Darkness), intelligent and funny - Saldana’s Uhura avoids the past stereotypes of women in sci-fi and provides another great example of how significant a part women play in the Star Trek universe.”
